With every day that passes, more disconcerting news is released about the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Although there are a number of things you can do to keep yourself safe, the latest recommendation in lowering the risk of Coronavirus spread is to practice social distancing. 

What is Social Distancing?


True to how it sounds, social distancing means isolating yourself - or creating distance - between yourself and others. This virus spreads from person to person within a distance of 6 feet, and can live on surfaces for hours, even days. Removing yourself from social situations is not only a great way to keep yourself safe, but also prevent infecting others if you are ill and don’t know it yet. Social distancing is one of a number of ways to start flattening the Coronavirus curve, and slowing down the spread through protective measures. 

Social distancing might feel like a very comfortable space to those with introverted natures, however humans are social creatures by design. We crave connection, and need tasks to keep our minds busy and productive. We have some helpful tips for how to occupy your time at home, keep yourself positive, stay sane, and keep calm during these uncertain times. 

Stopping the Spread of Coronavirus: Ways to Keep Calm, Positive, and Busy while Social Distancing


Work on making music playlists. 

Many of us get into the same routines with music. Start exploring new artists on Spotify or Pandora, and create new fun and unique playlists to boost your spirits. 


Do something you’ve been putting off.

We’re sure there are a lot of things you have put off doing due to a lack of time. However, now that you have all the time in the world… 

  • Do your taxes
  • Organize your bills, your files, and back-up your computer 
  • Organize your digital photos
  • Clean out your closet, and let go of any clothes that aren’t awesome
  • Reorganize your kitchen to be more efficient than ever
  • Pick up that instrument you’ve been wanting to learn
  • Organize your books 
  • Read a book
  • Remove stuff every surface in your home, and dust everything
  • Call mom and dad
  • Write letters
  • Give the dog a bath


Start a podcast club. 

Text your friends and share a couple of podcast episodes to listen to over the next couple of days. Set a time to have a virtual meeting to discuss the episodes over Google Hangouts or Zoom. 


Order takeout from a local restaurant. 

Right now a lot of small local businesses, restaurants, and customer service employees are really suffering. Order food from a local restaurant to be delivered, and tip big. 


Connect virtually. 

There are so many apps to connect with friends and loved ones now - Snapchat, WhatsApp, Marco Polo, Instagram - so keep connecting. Text, video call, email, and message everyone. Share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Send words of love and encouragement. 


Start a new show. 

There are so many great shows streaming right now, and it isn’t very often that we have the time to really dive into something new. Pick a show you’ve been wanting to check out and start bingeing!


Learn a new craft, and order supplies online. 

Ever wanted to learn how to knit? Ever tried cross stitching? Have the urge to start painting or drawing? Well, take advantage of online ordering, delivery services, and YouTube.

Plan for the future. 

This pandemic will come to an end - even faster if we continue to practice safe measures like social distancing and cleanliness. Instead of dwelling on everything you can’t do now, start planning for what you will do in the future. Go online and search new destinations that you’ll explore, adventures you can take, or new experiences you want to try.
